Performed as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘Open Stages’ project, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui depicts a society confronted with a ruthless dictator.

Transposing Hitler’s rise to power to 1930s Chicago, the play portrays a group of small-time gangsters led by the exploitative Arturo Ui charming and bullying their way to political supremacy. In its exploration of the dangers of defying despotism, Bertolt Brecht’s groundbreaking play asks: can the people resist, or will their apathy permit this new tyranny?

London’s historic Greenwood Theatre plays host to this dynamic revival of Brecht’s play, incorporating provocative film and inspirational design.

Amidst the turmoil of this year’s ‘Arab Spring’, we are reminded of how relevant its messages remain.

In Marie Kreutzers Debüt "Die Vaterlosen" treffen die Kinder einer Landkommune am Grab ihres ehemaligen Patriarchen wieder aufeinander - eine Aufarbeitung des Erbes der 68er-Generation: "ein Familienfilm, der mit viel Gespür für seine Figuren erzählt, welche psychischen Deformationen die Kinder, nun im Alter der Regisseurin, davon getragen haben, weil sie früher immer machen mussten, was sie wollten." LONDON FILM FESTIVAL - DEUTSCHER FILM: Hut in the Woods, Wednesday, 19.10., 03.30pm

A young man befriends an orphaned boy, and they try to escape the world by building a cabin in the woods.

Not so long ago, Martin was a gifted mathematician with a career and a steady girlfriend. But after a spell in psychiatric care, he is released with no job and no way of supporting himself, labelled as mentally ill. Viktor is a young Ukrainian boy recently orphaned following his mother's OD. When the two meet, Martin takes Victor under his wing, and fleeing the city, they escape to a forest where they manage to build a hut robust enough to live in. Though not easy, their back-to-nature subsistence life is idyllic by comparison to what they have left behind, and the pair become firm friends. Martin even meets a sympathetic young woman, Lena, who he encourages to live in a more idealistic way. But just as Martin has started to find happiness, harsh reality intervenes Director Hans Weingartner is best known here for his second film, The Edukators, but his new film is closer to his debut feature, The White Noise (LFF 2000). In common with that film, Hut in the Woods takes a progressive view of mental illness, creating believable and likeable characters and telling their story with empathy and an enviable lightness of touch.

BFI LONDON FILM FESTIVAL

Das vom British Film Institute (bfi) organisierte Londoner Film Festival wurde am 12. Oktober eröffent. Dass es bereits zum 55. Mal stattfindet, spricht für sich!

 

Gezeigt werden Filme und Kurzfilme aus über 50 verschiedenen Ländern, die bis dato noch nicht in britischen Kinos zu sehen waren - insbesondere Filme, die auf den Festivals in Cannes oder Venedig großen Beifall fanden.
Unter anderem sind auch deutschsprachige Meisterwerke, wie "Breathing", Debut des Österreichers Karl Markovics, oder "Stopped on Track" von Andreas Dresen, zu sehen.

Cameron beklagt "moralischen Zerfall"

Großbritannien fragt nach den Ursachen für die jüngsten Krawalle in mehreren Städten. Premierminister Cameron gibt Antworten: Schuld seien der moralische Zerfall, Schulen ohne Disziplin und die Faulheit vieler Bürger.

 

Nach den schwersten Krawallen, die Großbritannien seit vielen Jahren erlebt hat, beginnt jetzt die politische Aufarbeitung dieses Geschehens. Premierminister David Cameron hielt am Montag (15.08.2011) eine Grundsatzrede in einem Jugendzentrum in Oxfordshire. In Großbritannien habe sich über Generationen und in "Zeitlupe" ein "moralischer Zusammenbruch" von Teilen des Landes ereignet, sagte der konservative Regierungschef dort.
